Environmental Law refers to the body of regulations, treaties, statutes, and common law that governs the interaction between human activities and the natural environment. Its primary goal is to protect and preserve the environment, prevent pollution, and manage the sustainable use of natural resources. Environmental law is essential for addressing the challenges of environmental degradation, climate change, deforestation, biodiversity loss, and pollution. In India, environmental law is governed by both national legislation and international treaties to which India is a signatory. These laws are implemented and enforced by various government bodies, including the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEFCC), the National Green Tribunal (NGT), and state pollution control boards.
